World's longest sea bridge opens in China... (but don't think about crossing it on foot, it's the length of a marathon)

China has opened the world's longest cross-sea bridge - which stretches five miles further than the distance between Dover and Calais.
The Jiaozhou Bay bridge is 26.4 miles long and links China's eastern port city of Qingdao to the offshore island Huangdao.
The road bridge, which is 110ft wide and is the longest of its kind, cost nearly £1billion to build.

Last December officials announced workers had begun constructing a bridge to link southern Guangdong province with Hong Kong and Macau.
Set to be completed in 2016, officials said the £6.5billion bridge will span nearly 30 miles.
It will be designed to cope with earthquakes up to magnitude 8.0, strong typhoons and the impact of a 300,000 tonne vessel.
But both structures will still be dwarfed by the longest bridge in the world, also in China.
The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge is an astonishing 102 miles in length.

Characteristics and finishing of concrete work

A decorative finish for concrete work; achieved  by removing the outer skin of mortar, generally   before the concrete has fully hardened, and exposing the coarse aggregate.


Architectural concrete may be structural or just an external finish/cladding. The choice would be dictated by the weight considerations. For most projects, the architectural concrete layer (especially for building facades) usually takes the structural loads.





CHARACTERISTICS:
Concrete is a unique building material in that it begins as a liquid and ends as a solid, and thus is constructed twice – once as formwork; once as concrete.
When exposed to view as architectural poured concrete, this method of construction reveals the history of the fabrication, leaving a palimpsest of the molded textures of the formwork. Be it the grain of plywood, the lines of the board forms, or the jointing of fiberglass panels, the pentimento of the container remains.
The formwork characteristics, along with the ties that brace the forms, color, finish, and jointing, provide a myriad of choices for the designer to consider.
Tensile ties are required to prevent the spread and failure of the formwork under the pressure of the liquid concrete being poured into the forms.

Their location and pattern is a product of coordination between the architect and structural engineer as their indentations remain on the surface of the finished product.
The color of concrete is affected by the sand in the mixture while the finish of the concrete is affected by the admixtures to create a sheen or a matte surface.
Textures can range from super smooth with use of a steel or fiberglass form and a fine aggregate to a rough brutal finish created by post-curing techniques such as sandblasting or bush hammering to expose the aggregate beneath the surface.
The size of the panels of the formwork determines the spacing of joints as well as the form patterning; typical are 8- and 10-foot spans and 2-inch boards. The joints between panels can be enhanced and revealed by the addition of shaped strips in the formwork. The joint can be deep to provide a dark line, protrude to catch sunlight and cast a shadow, or be reduced to appear nonexistent by a butt joint.

Finishing concrete

For concrete floors and pavements, the appearance, smoothness, and durability of the surface is particularly important. Finishing refers to any final treatment of the concrete surface after it has been consolidated to achieve the desired properties
Exposure can be achieved in several looks.


TYPES EXPOSED CONCRETE FINISH

The most popular finishing forms are represented by: integrally pigmentation of concrete. Pigments based on oxides used at concrete colouring are available in three shapes: fine dry powders, liquids/dispersions, granulated powder. Most frequent shape for pigments using is the dry powder which can be directly mixed with cement or fresh concrete. 

  • AGGREGATE EXPOSURE
 Aggregate exposure for supine cast panels is realized by washing the  surface. This process offers a very attractive finishing at a cheap price, and selected aggregates have to be uniform in size,

  • ABRASION 
A large set of formworks with plastic properties are available in a large field of models and profiles, permitting concrete surfaces casting with shape of linear plates.

  • ABRASIVE BLASTING
It's also possible to expose the aggregate after the concrete has set and hardened by using abrasive blasting (either sandblasting or shotblasting). The disadvantage of abrasive blasting is that it can fracture the aggregate and dull its appearance. This method is not a good option if preserving the shape and full color intensity of the aggregate is essential.

SAND BLASTING EXPOSED CONCRETE


  • BRUSHING AND WASHING
This is the oldest method and the simplest because it doesn't require chemical retarders or special tools. You just wash away the thin layer of surface mortar covering the aggregate by spraying with water and scrubbing with a broom until the aggregate is exposed to the desired depth.
