Furniture Design By Great Masters

Furniture Design By Great Masters

ADOLF LOSS

  • Loos Worked on the simple principles. Sraight lines, clean curves.
  • Along with his theory, his conception of the raumplan or plan of volumes , gradually evolved.
  • As a interior designer he believed that as much as possible should be built in. If not possible or desirable then the furniture had to be of top craftsmanship, but not fancy. Quality material and workmanship were, for loos, the ultimate expression of aesthetic excellence.
  • He believed -“ To seek beauty only in form and not in ornament is the foal to which all humanity is striving”
  • A curvaceous chaise lounge used in interiors
  • Dimensions in centimeters: chaise lounge W 70 / D 120 / H front roll 39, back roll 79; ottoman 50 x 50, H 39•

ALVAR ALTO

  • Finland’s first Modernists.
  • His unique architectural style is characterized by asymmetry, curved lines, and contrasting natural materials.
  • His early works were flavored with a "heroic functionalism" that was based around the idea that a structure's use should determine its form.
  • His philosophy -: "There are only two things in art -- humanity or its lack. The mere form, some detail in itself, does not create humanity. We have today enough of superficial and rather bad architecture which is modern."
  • Aalto also created glassware, jewelry, furniture, interiors, and paintings. In 1932, he designed a new kind of laminated plywood furniture and won a number of design awards for his work on household and industrial items.

CARLO BUGATTI

Carlo Bugatti's furniture combines the picturesque asymmetry of Art Nouveau with the exoticism of Moorish and Japanese influences. However, it is pure fantasy, drawing inspiration from the Orientalist art movement of the latenineteenth century

  • His designs are wild, exciting, innovative, and sometimes simply just too much. The forms are asymmetrical, curvilinear, and ovoid, while the surfaces are stenciled, inlaid, bronzed, and tassled -- usually all at once.
  • Chairs, tables, and silverware often boast abstract insect forms as adornment. His works teeter between the imaginatively tasteful and the gaudy; not surprisingly, the designer gained reknown for his extravagance and eccentricity. Walnut, copper, pewter, vellum; H. 29 1/2 in. (74.9 cm), W. 23 5/8 in. (60 cm), D. 22 1/2 in. (57.2 cm)

The writing surface of this desk is covered in vellum, held in place with punched copper strapping; the walnut legs are inlaid with pewter imitating calligraphic brush painting. The unusual profile of the desk suggests the jaws and teeth of an alligato.

A late 19th - early 20th Century Folding Chair by Carlo Bugatti, Carved & parcel ebonized walnut-wood with pewter inlay, 46" X 12.5" X 33.5". The high-back with hollowed carving of the Ace of Clubs (Clove leaf), the back, the seat and the front leg are inlaid with pewter in floral and geometrical motif.

Theme residences are pretty much in demand by the home buyers of the middle class families

Theme residences are pretty much in demand by the home buyers of the middle class families. Residential communities in India have grown exponentialy over the period of time. We often wonder how certain places like hotels, resorts are designed as everything and all the elements in the residence are so harmonious. But the frequency of elements will only be tuned when right thing is placed at the right place.

Theme based residences is something coming out of the customers choice as customers want their home to look unique from inside out and rather than investing on simple interiors buyers are preferring to invest in theme based properties or interior designing.

A theme is nothing but transforming an idea or imagination into the real world or into the physical form. Most of the ideas can be picked from internet but still you can some of your custom themes eg. if your kid likes any cartoon character a lot, then children's room can be designed based on their character liking eg Chota Bheem is very famous among Indian kids these days. One should be very careful when it comes to selecting themes. Themse should go along with the individuals personality likes dislikes and taste.
For a person who loves trekking or jungle trips he can always have a theme based on some water fall. The person can display Jog Falls or Niagra Falls as the theme. He can have some water bodies inside or outside the house.

Whenever desiging a theme, buyer should always be able to connect himself with the theme.
It will be pointless to say as everyone has a unique personality and choice so there are lots and lots of theme ideas. It is just we need to understand what we want out of themes.

Do a thorugh research before designing themes. Make sure you do a local market research in order to make sure the items required for the theme will be available like sculptures, carpets, mirror frames, handicraft textiles which will add more to home decor. Here is one tip which you can try for a very low cost. You can buy wall stickers which come in different designs are available for a decent price on www.amazon.in www.flipkart.com and www.snapdeal.com Only downside of having a theme is after a period of time one may feel bored of the theme and may want to change.

Tips to visualize the small kitchen as spacious

Refining interiors is very important which in turn can give relaxing qualities and offer a sense of calm. Kitchen is important for everyone from amateur chefs to television show like Master Chef. These days with high price real estates apartments and houses are really high on space crunch and the feeling of large space is getting lost in the cozy apartment as space is normally the element which is lacking.

Kitchen is one area in the house where people actually have to have a feeling of a larger space.

Still with proper refinements, some adjustment and some small lookouts the tiny space can be worked as wonders. There can be some illusion created in order to have the feeling of a larger area.

Consider mirror

Mirrors are useful when there is no natural light in kitchen. Trust me having natural light in kitchen is like a dream come true. Mirrors actually help to open the space and they reflect the light in the kitchen area.

Color themes

We all know how colors are important in our life. Light colors gives a visual of expanded space. If you have a good view outside the window it will be a better idea to bring the outdoor color inside and then decide the color based on contrast. Keeping light color palette on kitchen tops, back splashes, walls and mill work also helps a small kitchen feel more open and airy.

Shelving the kitchen

This really does not go that easy with homemakers as it need a lot of cleanliness and hygine. But if a proper maintenance can be done open shelves are really helpful. Open shelves provides ease of access for dishes glasses and jars. If the ceiling in house is low it is always better to have a secong thought if you are planning for upper cabinets.

Overlooked areas in kitchen

There are certain areas which are actuallly overlooked when we design the kitchen. Floor is one of the elements which is overly overlooked and is considered as part of kitchen interiors at all. However a pattern floor will add an expansive view to the kitchen. It is always good to to a patterned flooring for the kitchen area.

Lighting

It is always good to have a pendant or hanging light on the island kitchen or breakfast table. Having good light while cooking adds to the feel of cooking as well. Under cabinet lighting recessed and or flush fixtures can add a lot to the kitchen.

GYPSUM BOARD

  • Gypsum board is functionally simple, elegant and versatile design concept for interiors.
  • They came for variety of surfaces, lamination and decorative patterns.
  • Gypsum is basically calcium sulphate mineral with 21% crystalline water by weight.
  • Gypsum ceilingpanels are formed by enclosing and bonding together a core of set gypsum
  • plaster between two sheets of heavy duty craft paper liner.
USES :
  • Gypsum board ceiling panels are light in weight and have a high standard of safety.
  • It provide resistence against fire.
  • They have sound insulation property.
  • It have low thermal capacity.
  • They easy and fast to install.

Kanchanjunga Apartments by Charles Correa in Mumbai India

Architect:
Charles Correa
Location:
Mumbai, India
By developing climatic solutions for different sites and programs, Indian architect Charles Correa designed the Kanchanjunga Apartments. Located in Mumbai, the U.S. equivalent of New York City in terms of population and diversity, the 32 luxury apartments are located south-west of downtown in an upscale suburban setting embodying the characteristics of the upper echelon of society within the community.

The Kanchanjunga Apartments are a direct response to the present culture, the escalating urbanization, and the climatic conditions for the region. They pay homage to the vernacular architecture that once stood on the site before the development in a number of ways. More on Kanchanjunga Apartments after the break.
In Mumbai, a building has to be oriented east-west to catch prevailing sea breezes and to open up the best views of the city. Unfortunately, these are also the directions of the hot sun and the heavy monsoon rains. The old bungalows solved these problems by wrapping a protective layer of verandas around the main living areas, thus providing the occupants with two lines of defense against the elements.

Clearly, such an arrangement had its precedent in the cross-over units of Le Corbusier's Unite d' Habitation built in Marseilles in 1952, although here in Mumbai the sectional provision was achieved without resorting to the extreme of differentiating between up-and-down going units. The building is a 32 story reinforced concrete structure with 6.3m cantilevered open terraces. The central core is composed of lifts and provides the main structural element for resisting lateral loads. The central core was constructed ahead of the main structure by slip method of construction. This technique was used for the first time in India for a multistory building. The concrete construction and large areas of white panels bears a strong resemblance to modern apartment buildings in the West, perhaps due to Correa's western education. However, the garden terraces of the Kanchanjunga Apartments are actually a modern interpretation of a feature of the traditional Indian bungalow: the veranda.

Bringing Burj Khalifa to life required a combination of visionary ideals and solid science

Facts and figures of Burj Khalifa

Bringing Burj Khalifa to life required a combination of visionary ideals and solid science. In the process, the project amassed an awe-inspiring number of facts, figures, and statistics.

World Records

At over 828 metres (2,716.5 feet) and more than 160 stories, Burj Khalifa holds the following records:

  • Tallest building in the world
  • Tallest free-standing structure in the world
  • Highest number of stories in the world
  • Highest occupied floor in the world
  • Highest outdoor observation deck in the world
  • Elevator with the longest travel distance in the world
  • Tallest service elevator in the world
  • Tallest of the Supertall

Tallest of the supertall

Not only is Burj Khalifa the world’s tallest building, it has also broken two other impressive records: tallest structure, previously held by the KVLY-TV mast in Blanchard, North Dakota, and tallest free-standing structure, previously held by Toronto’s CN Tower. The Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has established 3 criteria to determine what makes a tall building tall. Burj Khalifa wins by far in all three categories.

Height to architectural top

Height is measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the architectural top of the building. This includes spires, but does not include antennae, signage, flagpoles or other functional-technical equipment. This measurement is the most widely used and is used to define the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat rankings of the Tallest Buildings in the World.

Highest occupied floor

Height is measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the highest continually occupied floor within the building. Maintenance areas are not included.

Height to tip

Height is measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the highest point of the building, irrespective of material or function of the highest element. This includes antennae, flagpoles, signage and other functional-technical equipment.

Expert advice on exterior painting, selecting the right house paint, DIY

Expert advice on exterior painting, selecting the right house paint, DIY painting tips and advice for dealing with common outdoor paint problems.

When it comes to improving your home, one of the quickest, easiest, and least expensive ways to make a significant impact is to paint. Nothing revives weather worn siding or adds a touch of style better than a new paint job. Painting can be like an instant renovation.

But where do you start? And what type of paint should you choose? Latex? Alkyd? Something else? The type of siding on your home can make a big difference in your selection. Paints have changed dramatically over the past few years so it is smart to stay on top of current recommendations.

Should you do the work yourself? This is another big decision. The cost of having a house painted is largely labor.
If you do it yourself, you can save significantly, but you’ll need time and some muscle. And you may need a little direction in the proper techniques.

Please follow Role of colors in life and interior designing to understand more about colors and color schemes.
